LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University football team ended the 2013 season with a 15-12 defeat at the hands of Lakeland College on Saturday afternoon.
Lakeland's Ramsey Riehl nailed a 28-yard field goal as time expired to hand the visitors the victory on senior day. The game winning field goal was set up by an interception on a screen pass with less than a minute remaining. Lakeland moved 25 yards after starting on the Benedictine side in six plays to record the game-winner, the third field goal of the day for the visitors.
Benedictine marched 64 yards on 18 plays after the second Lakeland field goal evened the game at 12-12 with 11:02 to play. The drive ticked off 7:35 of game time but a missed field goal handed the ball back to Lakeland with 3:27 to play.
Lakeland opened an early 9-0 lead in the game with a touchdown and a field goal in the first quarter. Benedictine rallied to take a 12-9 lead into the half.
Jarrett Lecas intercepted a pass and placed Benedictine deep inside Lakeland territory for the first score.
Michael McNulty plunged in from a yard out for the first touchdown.
Jake Sakal recorded a safety by tackling the Lakeland running back in the end zone to even the score with 3:02 to play in the half.
Following the safety, Benedictine drove down to kick a 19-yard field goal off the foot of
Billy Dixon and take the lead just before the half. The drive started on the Lakeland side of the field after the free kick. The field goal was set up in part by a 28-yard pass play from
Cyle Schultz to
Artie Monaco.
The game featured five turnovers in the sloppy conditions. Monaco gained 102 yards on the ground on 20 carries while adding five catches for 84 yards. Monaco rolled up nearly 300 all purpose yards in the loss.
The defense was led by 10 tackles from Niko Paaloalo, three of which were for loss with a sack included.
Kris Rosemann also recorded an interception in the game.
Benedictine ends the year with a 7-3 record and a 4-2 mark in the NACC, good for third.
