MADISON, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team lost for the first time in conference play when Edgewood College hit a jumper in the lane just before the final buzzer to score a 57-56 win.
Benedictine scored the first four points of the game on buckets from
Meghan Novak and
Sierra Dunner. The lead held for most of the first half. Six consecutive points enabled Benedictine to grab a 28-19 lead with 4:45 to play in the first. Edgewood battled to within three at the break, 28-25.
Benedictine again found themselves leading by nine points early in the second half when
Michelle Batty hit a jumper at the 18:24 mark. Edgewood responded by scoring eight straight to pull within a single point. The hosts took the lead with 12:10 left and opened a 49-40 advantage with 7:24 remaining. Still down nine with 4:39 left, Benedictine struck for nine in a row to even the score. A pair of free throws from
Briana Hamilton opened the run. Hamilton scored seven of the nine points during the run. Down 55-54 with :32 remaining, Hamilton knocked down a pair of free throws to put Benedictine up a point before the dramatics just inside two seconds left.
The contest featured seven ties and seven lead changes. Hamilton scored a career best 22 points and also hauled in seven rebounds. Novak also crossed into double figures with 12 points. Benedictine finished the game shooting 35.6 percent from the field.
Benedictine (1-4, 1-1) travels to Aurora on Wednesday night.
