Baseball Ends Trip With Defeat

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Benedictine University baseball team capped its visit to Florida by allowing four unearned runs in a 9-4 loss to 16th ranked UW-Whitewater on Saturday morning.

Whitewater touched Benedictine starter Pat Cashman for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning to open and early 2-0 lead. Benedictine battled back and scored three unanswered runs to open a 3-2 lead. John Cervantes opened the second inning with a single up the middle and moved to second on a wild pitch. Mike Luschen logged an RBI single for the first run in the second. Nick Karakosta posted an RBI single in the third to tie the game. Karakosta logged a double in the fifth inning to score Tom Higgins with the go ahead run.

Whitewater went on to score seven unanswered including three in the seventh and eighth to post the win. Ryan Mullin broke the string with an RBI groundout in the ninth, but Benedictine was unable to bring the tying run to the plate. Matt Roberts worked into the ninth for Whitewater, striking out eight.

Cashman took the hard luck loss despite working into the seventh. Starting for the second time this season, Cashman walked two and struck out five. Karakosta and Luschen posted two hits for Benedictine, who amassed eight in the loss.

Benedictine (6-3) is scheduled to begin a busy week upon returning. The Eagles will meet Wheaton on the road Tuesday and Wednesday.
