ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse won its first ever Midwest Lacrosse Conference game, taking down Fontbonne on the road in overtime 14-13.
Fontbonne scored the first three goals of the game and held a lead of 7-2 at the midway point of the second quarter, but Benedictine put together a fierce rally.
Robert Abbott scored the first of six unanswered goals for Benedictine off an assist from
Tyler Buschow with 7:36 to play in the first half.
Zachary MacLachlan handed Benedictine its first lead with 10:59 remaining in the third quarter on an unassisted tally. The goal was the second of the contest for MacLachlan. Back-to-back finders from Abbott and
Andrew Zmijewski to close the third handed Benedictine a 10-8 lead entering the final quarter.
Fontbonne netted consecutive goals to late to even the game a 12 aside before
Connor Mersch put Benedictine back in front with 4:35 left. The Griffins were able to force overtime with a goal in the final seconds. Abbott netted the game winner for the Eagles just over a minute into the extra session.
Benedictine won 21 faceoffs in the contest including 19 from Abbott. Abbott scored five times and also distributed a pair of helpers. Zmijewski added three goals with Mersch, Buchow, and MacLachlan notching two apiece.
Jeffrey Smitheram halted 15 shots in goal.
Benedictine (3-5, 1-1) will meet MSOE on the road Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
