Box Score
CAROL STREAM, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team scored five runs in the fifth inning to rally for a 6-5 win in the opener of a series with Wheaton on a cold Tuesday afternoon.
Benedictine opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first when
John Cervantes recorded an RBI single to right. Wheaton was able to tie the game in the bottom of the frame and took the lead with a four-run second.
The lead held until the fifth. Benedictine took advantage of wildness from three different Wheaton hurlers in the inning to strike for five runs on only two hits. With one away,
Tim Hendricks opened the rally with a single. Benedictine then drew three consecutive walks to force home a run when Cervantes eased up the first base line. A bases loaded walk to
Kevin Hendricks brought Benedictine within 5-3.
Brandon Clark singled home a run and
Tim Gindville was hit by a pitch to even the score. A sacrifice fly from
Chris Wanderling capped the scoring.
The runs enabled
Mike Irgang to collect the win in his second start of the season. Irgang battled through five innings, walking three and striking out four.
Chris Jordan piggy backed Irgang with four flawless frames to earn the save. Jordan allowed just a single hit in four innings, retiring the final 10 batters faced.
Benedictine drew 11 walks in the contest and finished with eight hits.
Tim Hendricks was the lone player with more than one while Cervantes knocked home a pair.
Nick Karakosta,
Ryan Mullin, Cervantes, Clark, and
Mike Loni all drew two walks in the victory.
Benedictine (7-3) will meet Wheaton again on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. The Tuesday game was the first for either squad in the north.
