Baseball Holds Off Elmhurst

Box Score

LISLE, Ill. - Continuing a year long trend, the Benedictine University baseball team rallied from an early deficit and held off a late charge from Elmhurst in a 10-8 non-conference victory on Friday afternoon.

Elmhurst picked up a pair of two-out runs in the first inning to open a 2-0 lead against Benedictine starter Nick Diessner. Nick Karakosta cut the margin in half with one swing in the bottom of the inning, drilling his second homer of the season to left. Benedictine was able to tie the game in the second with an RBI single off the bat of Tom Higgins.

The Eagles took the lead in the fourth inning and never trailed the remainder of the contest. Mike Loni drew a bases loaded walk to force home the go ahead run. Benedictine plated two in the fifth and three in the sixth to jump ahead 8-2.

Elmhurst kept the game interesting against the bullpen, bringing the tying runs to the plate in the seventh and ninth, but Benedictine was able to hang on for the victory.

Benedictine recorded 13 hits in the win. Diessner improved to 2-0 on the year by tossing 6.1 innings. Cristian Ochoa earned his first career save by striking out the last batter of the game. Higgins led the offense with a 3-for-3 game. Karakosta and Ryan Mullin each logged two hits as nine individuals collected at least one hit in the game. Loni and Karakosta each drove home two runs.

Benedictine (15-6) will host MSOE in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
