Baseball Win Streak Ends in Split

FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University baseball team extended its winning streak to six games in the opener of a doubleheader but suffered a tough defeat in the second affair to split a double at Marian.

Benedictine came from behind twice in the opener, scoring three runs in the fourth and eighth to put away Marian 7-2. Kevin Crowley struck out 10 batters in tossing eight innings to earn the win, improving to 5-1 on the season. Crowley allowed just one earned run in the win.

The offense laced 14 hits, sparked by the bottom of the order. Steve Cocat posted three hits with Mike Loni adding a pair. All nine starters posted a hit in the game.

Game two saw Benedictine race to a 5-0 lead with a five-run top of the third. Marian was able to tie the game in the sixth, battling back. The Sabres struck for three in the bottom of the eighth to lead for the first time and held on for the win as Benedictine scored twice in the ninth and left the tying run on third.

Nick Diessner started the second contest but did not factor in the decision, striking out seven in five innings. The Eagles slashed 12 hits in game two, with four different individuals posting multiple hits. Ryan Mullin drove home three runs in the losing effort.

During the doubleheader both John Cervantes and Nick Karakosta extended lengthy streaks. Cervantes has recorded a hit in 16 straight games with Karakosta right behind at 15. Karakosta has reached at least once in every game this season. Kevin Hendricks also extended his hitting streak to 10 games with hits in both contests. Mullin has reached base in 18 consecutive contests.

Benedictine (20-7, 10-4) will host Concordia Wisconsin on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m.
