Baseball Walks Off With Win in 13

Box Score

LISLE, Ill. - John Cervantes played the role of hero not once, but twice as the Benedictine University baseball team recorded a non-conference win over North Park 7-6 in 13 innings.

Benedictine held a 4-2 lead entering the ninth inning, but North Park rallied to tie the game and force extras, leaving the bases loaded in the frame. Benedictine had twice come from down to grab the lead. Tom Higgins tied the game with an RBI double in the fourth and Kevin Hendricks again evened the score with a sacrifice fly in the last of the fifth. Nick Karakosta's two-run single put the Eagles ahead in the seventh, setting the stage for the late inning drama.

North Park tallied a pair of unearned runs in the top of the 11th to grab a 6-4 edge. With the bases empty and two down in the bottom of the frame Karakosta and Kevin Hendricks collected back-to-back singles. Cervantes drove a double deep to left to even the game.

Kevin Hendricks recorded a two-out walk in the bottom of the 13th and moved up on a wild pitch before Cervantes ended the game over four hours after it began with a bloop single to right.

Cristian Ochoa picked up the win, tossing the final 2.1 innings. Ochoa left the go ahead run on third in the 12th working out of a one-out jam. Matt Vucovich made his first start of the year and worked five innings, striking out six.

Tim Hendricks and Higgins posted three hits along with Cervantes. Eight individuals posted at least one hit in the game. Ryan Mullin, Karakosta, and Cervantes all extended lenghty streaks. Mullin has reached base in 21 straight games while Karakosta has reached in all 30 this year. Karakosta now owns an 18-game hitting streak with Cervantes one better at 19.

Benedictine (23-7) will host Wheaton on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
