LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team saw its conference title hopes take a serious hit after splitting a doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at the Sports Complex.
Benedictine squandered a lead of 9-3 in the opener, falling 12-11 before rebounding behind the pitching performance of
Chris Jordan to win the night cap 4-1.
Game one saw plenty of offense in a game that lasted over three hours. Wisconsin Lutheran struck for a pair of first inning runs before Benedictine scored eight in a row. The Eagles took the lead with three runs in the second.
Tim Hendricks tied the game and
Kevin Hendricks used a two-run single in the frame to put Benedictine ahead.
The Eagles scored at least one run in the first six innings, taking a 10-6 lead into the eighth. Wisconsin Lutheran put six on the board in the frame to grab the lead. Throughout the entire contest, the visitors took advantage of walks, drawing a total of 15. Benedictine scored a single run in the bottom of the ninth but left the tying run at third and winning run on second.
Crowley worked five innings in the defeat, but left in line for the win.
Tim Hendricks posted four hits at the top of the lineup as all nine starters posted at least one. The Eagles amassed 17 hits in the loss, which put the brakes on a six-game win streak.
Kevin Hendricks also collected three hits in the defeat.
Game two was a different story. Eager to put the frustration from game one in the rearview, Benedictine quickly scored in the first on a
Ryan Mullin RBI single. After Wisconsin Lutheran was able to tie the game in the fourth, Benedictine scratched across two runs in the fifth and added another in the sixth to account for the final.
Chris Jordan was on cruise control, retiring 11 in a row at one point in the game. Jordan allowed just the single tally in a complete game, improving to 5-1 on the season. The lefty allowed just eight hits while striking out two.
Nick Karakosta and Mullin each posted two hits in the second affair.
Karakosta and Mullin extended lengthy streaks. Karakosta, the conference leader in doubles and RBIs, has reached base in every game this season. Mullin, who is among the national leaders in walks, has now reached in 26 straight contests. With hits in both games,
Tim Hendricks owns the longest active hitting streak at 12, his longest of the year. Hendricks leads the conference in average and runs scored while ranking among the nation's best hitters.
Benedictine (27-8, 15-5) is back in action on Tuesday with a non-conference neutral game against Washington University at Illinois Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
