LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team received contributions from several different players in sweeping past Maranatha in a doubleheader on Friday.
GAME ONE: BENEDICTINE 14, MARANATHA 0
It took until the third inning, but Benedictine broke through in a big way, netting nine runs on the way to a rout.
The big frame opened with a
Chris Wanderling single. Wanderling stole second and
Tim Hendricks followed with a walk. A double steal set the stage for
Nick Karakosta to open the scoring with a two-run double.
Ryan Mullin,
Steve Cocat,
Tom Higgins,
Tim Hendricks, and Karakosta all drove home runs in the inning.
Ty Anderson did the rest, spinning a complete game two-hitter. Anderson retired the final 17 batters he faced after allowing a one-out single in the third. The righty struck out six in his third start of the season. Anderson threw just over 70 pitches in the first complete game shutout of the season for Benedictine.
Karakosta stroked three hits and drove home three runs as Benedictine smashed 16 hits in the win.
Nick Severino,
Mike Luschen, Mullin, and Wanderling all finished with two hits.
GAME TWO: BENEDICTINE 18, MARANATHA 0
Benedictine made it a clean sweep by scoring at least one run in every inning during the second game. A seven-run third put the game out of reach.
Tim Hendricks doubled his homerun total for the season, cracking a pair of homers to right. The sophomore slapped a two-run homer in the second inning and added a three-run shot in the fourth.
Other big contributors in the second contest included Severino, Karakosta,
Tom Byrne, T.J. Floyd,
John Cervantes, Luschen, and
Tim Gindville, all of whom posted two hits. Karakosta posted five hits in the double.
Tim Feeley started for the first time and earned the win in a four-inning pitch limited effort. Feeley scattered four hits. Zack Miller, Nick MIshevich, and Cristian Ochoa all tossed an inning out of the bullpen.
Benedictine (14-4, 5-1) served as the visiting team in both games as the contests were originally scheduled to be played in Wisconsin. The Eagles will welcome Edgewood on Saturday afternoon for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader.
