Baseball Drops Regional Opener in Extras

Box Score

WHITEWATER, Wis. - The Benedictine University baseball team dropped its NCAA Regional opener on Wednesday afternoon, losing a 6-5 decision to UW-Stevens Point in 10 innings. The Eagles returned to the NCAA Postseason for the first time since 2003.

Benedictine did not trail in the contest until the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 10th. The Eagles raced to a 4-0 lead in the game. Ryan Mullin drove a 3-2 offering from UW-Stevens Point starter JP Feyereisen over the wall in right with two outs to hand the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the first. Tim Hendricks extended the lead with a double off the wall to score Steve Cocat in the second.

The Pointers rallied, scoring twice in the fifth to tie the score. Benedictine immediately took the lead in the sixth when Mike Loni singled with two outs. The Eagles scored all five runs with two outs. The second seeded Pointers again tied the game in the seventh and both teams had plenty of chances leading to the game-winning run in the 10th. Benedictine stranded 11 and Stevens Point trapped 13. The Eagles had runners at second and third with no outs in the eighth and failed to score, going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position from the eighth onward.

Pat Cashman started for Benedictine and did not factor in the decision, allowing five runs (four earned) in eight innings with a walk and five strikeouts. Tim Hendricks, the Northern Athletics Conference Position Player of the Year, lashed three hits at the top of the order while Mullin finished 2-for-4. Benedictine collected 10 hits in the defeat. The Eagles had posted a 13-5 win over UW-Stevens Point in Florida earlier this season.

Benedictine (32-11) will face the top seed in the regional, St. Thomas, at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday in an elimination game. St. Thomas dropped a 1-0 contest to sixth-seeded St. Scholastica in the first game of the day.
