FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 74-60 road win at Marian University on Saturday.
Benedictine opened the game with back-to-back layups from
Briana Hamilton and
Sierra Dunner to open a 4-0 lead. Marian came back to even the contest at 6-6 just over five minutes into the game. The Eagles responded with a 10-2 run finished on a
Vincenza Ranallo layup to grab a 16-8 lead with 11:01 to play in the half. Benedictine furthered the margin to 11 points at the break, holding a 32-21 lead. The Eagles shot 52 percent in the opening 20 minutes of play.
Marian was able to close within five points early in the second half and clawed within two points at 41-39 with 11:41 remaining. Benedictine responded with six straight points on two buckets from Ranallo and another from
Michelle Batty to grab a 47-39 lead. The hosts came back again, evening the game with 6:34 left.
Meghan Novak drained a three to open a 15-4 which allowed Benedictine to move ahead by double figures and ease to the victory by draining eight free throws in the final two minutes.
Benedictine improved from the field in the second half, shooting 56 percent to finish the game at 54 percent. Novak led four players in double figures with 22 points. Ranallo added 16 points with Batty notching 12 and Hamilton 11. Benedictine held a 44-28 edge on the glass.
Benedictine (5-7, 5-2) is scheduled to host Wisconsin Lutheran on Tuesday night.
