Women's Soccer Topples Lakeland

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's soccer team scored a 2-1 win on the road over Lakeland College on Saturday afternoon.

Benedictine put a pair of shots on target early, setting the tone. The Eagles opened the scoring in the eighth minute. Danielle Melotte blasted home a feed from Paige Velez to hand Benedictine a 1-0 lead. The goal marked the sixth of the season for Melotte. Megan Anderson extended the advantage to 2-0 in the 12th minute, converting on another feed from Velez for her third finder of the season. Lakeland did not put a shot on goal in the first half as Benedictine held a 10-2 advantage.

The Eagles did not score again, but hung on for the decision. The second half featured more even action with each squad registering five shots. Benedictine came out of the break with two quick shots on goal before Amanda Lozada faced the first Lakeland attempt on goal, making a save in the 50th minute. Lozada made two more saves in the half, finishing with three in earning the decision. Lakeland scored the lone goal in the 89th minute. Lozada's final save came in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

"It was good to get the result given that we are dealing with a lot of injuries right now," head coach Mike Boland said. "There was some good and some not so good today. This team has a higher ceiling, and we have yet to reach what we can be. At the end of the day, I am happy to see this team earn a win that we certainly deserved."

For the match, Benedictine totaled 15 shots. Melotte posted five shots with Anderson and Katie Gover collected three each.
