Women’s Basketball Weekly Preview: Dominican, Lakeland, Edgewood

The Benedictine University women's basketball season is winding down, and the team has just four games remaining. Three of those four games will take place over the next week. The team will play its last road regular season game at Dominican on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m., a home game against Lakeland at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, and a home game against Edgewood on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.

Last week, the seventh-place Eagles (9-12, 9-7) went 1-2 in three games. BenU fell to Concordia-Chicago 63-58 on Tuesday, lost to Wisconsin Lutheran 74-65 on Thursday, and defeated MSOE 66-52 on Saturday. Junior guards Meghan Novak and Vincenza Ranallo each averaged double-figure scoring over the three game stretch. BenU needs just one more victory to clinch a spot in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament.

Benedictine will head a few miles east on Wednesday night to take on last-place Dominican (0-22, 0-17). The Stars are still looking for win number one on the year after finishing last season with a record of just 1-24. Dominican comes in to the contest 10th in scoring offense (59.8) and last in scoring defense (85.2).

The Eagles and Stars have not met this season, and this will be the only meeting between the two teams. Last season, BenU defeated Dominican 64-58 at home and 70-50 on the road.

On Saturday, ninth-place Lakeland (8-13, 5-11) will visit the Dan and Ada Rice Center. It will be a busy day for BenU women's basketball, as it is Hall of Fame day, Senior day, and the team's annual "Play4Kay" game to raise money and awareness of The Kay Yow Cancer Fund. The Muskies are battling for the eighth and final spot in the NACC Tournament, as they sit half a game behind eighth-place Rockford and half a game ahead of tenth-place Marian. Lakeland is currently on a two-game losing streak, but the defeats came on the road at the hands of second-place Concordia-Wisconsin and fourth-place Alverno.

Benedictine traveled to Sheboygan, Wisconsin to take on Lakeland on December 14 and came away with a 64-50 win. After leading just 16-15 at halftime, the Eagles outscored the Muskies 48-35 in the second half and shot 60.7% from the floor. Sophomore post player Briana Hamilton led the Eagles with 14 points.

The Eagles will come right back at it on Sunday when Edgewood (11-10, 11-5) travels to the Dan and Ada Rice Center. Sunday's game will be a make-up game from February 1, as inclement weather postponed that contest. This will be the second time this season Benedictine will play on back-to-back days, as the team did so in Daytona Beach, Florida on December 20 and 21.

Edgewood comes into the contest as the third place team in the NACC, but Benedictine sits just two games behind them despite being in seventh place. BenU and Edgewood met back on November 30, with Edgewood coming out on top 57-56 after Rachel Pope hit a go-ahead basket with two seconds left. Hamilton scored 22 points to lead BenU.
