LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team opened the curtains on the 2014 season with a convincing 14-2 win over Calvin College on Saturday afternoon.
Benedictine opened the scoring on the first possession of the game. After
Rudy Berg won the faceoff,
Robert Abbott opened the scoring on a feed from
Andrew Zmijewski. Zmijewski made it 2-0 less than two minutes later. Benedictine extended the lead to 3-0 following the ensuing faceoff. Benedictine led 4-1 after the first and added two in the second to take a 6-1 lead at the break. The doors opened in the third as Benedictine struck for six goals to put the game out of reach.
Blake Keenan debuted with a four goal performance, adding two assists.
Trevor Buman also had a strong showing, notching three goals on a team best eight shots. Brandon Berg and Abbott each scored twice.
Defensively, Benedictine converted on 21-of-27 clear attempts and forced 32 turnovers with 15 caused. The Eagles won 15-of-20 faceoffs with
Rudy Berg finishing 11-for-15.
Jeffrey Smitheram stopped 17 shots in goal. Benedictine scooped up 59 groundballs led by 13 from
Rudy Berg. The Eagles held a 43-30 advantage in shots.
Benedictine (1-0) visits Olivet on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
