RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team was unable to hold off a hot shooting Concordia Chicago squad in the second half, falling 63-58 on Tuesday.
Benedictine overcame a seven-point deficit in the first half to hold a slim 24-22 edge at the break. Trailing 18-11 just past the midway point of the opening half, the Eagles opened a 9-0 run with a jumper from
Alanna Ferry. Another Ferry jumper with 4:40 remaining put Benedictine ahead.
Rena Ranallo extended the margin to four points with 3:20 left. Both teams shot under 30 percent in the opening half.
The second half featured plenty of hot shooting as Concordia Chicago hit on a 61.9 percent clip and Benedictine 51.9 percent. The hosts scored the first six points of the second half to jump ahead by four. Benedictine led only once in the frame, 34-33, when
Michelle Gaede converted on a transition layup with with 14:32 left. Concordia Chicago closed the game with a flourish, scoring nine straight after the contest was even 47-47 to pull away.
Meghan Novak led Benedictine with 12 points. Gaede added 11 off the bench. The Eagles held a 40-34 edge on the glass and received 29 points from the bench.
Benedictine (8-11, 8-6) welcomes Wisconsin Lutheran on Thursday night in the makeup of a game postponed earlier this season due to cold.
