WINTER HAVEN, Florida-- The Benedictine University baseball team lost its final game of this year's Spring break trip to Florida, falling in 11 innings to Ramapo College 4-3. The Saturday morning contest was played at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida, which is the former Spring Training home of the Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians.
It was a back-and-forth game between the Eagles and Roadrunners, as both teams plated a run in the first inning. Ramapo would score in the top of the first off of BenU starter
Mike Irgang (4.1 innings, eight hits, one run, no decision), but BenU responded in the bottom of the inning with a
Tim Hendricks (4-for-4, two RBI, double) single that drove in
Ryan Mullin (1-for-5, double, run) after
Andrew Hotze moved him from second to third on a sacrafice bunt. Hendricks would single in another run in the third inning, driving in Hotze to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
Ramapo would score the next three runs of the game, plating one in the sixth off of BenU's
Alex Wolfe (2.1 innings, three hits, one run) and two more in the 11th on a two-run double off BenU's
Jozef Palasiewicz. The Eagles would score one in the bottom of the 11th on a pinch-hit single from
Brandon Villanueva to round out the scoring.
Dylan Smith suffered the loss for BenU, but was fantastic out of the bullpen (3.2 innings, two hits, two runs) and did not allow a hit through his first three innings of work. The Eagles will now head home and are scheduled to play against Wheaton College on Tuesday in Carol Stream, Illinois at 5:00 p.m. CT.
