The Benedictine University baseball team has returned home from a 10-game trip in Florida to a chaotic schedule. After multiple cancellations and postponements which re-shuffled the schedule, baseball is now slated for four road games over the next few days: a trip to North Park on
Wednesday at 3:00 p.m., a road game against Wheaton on
Thursday at 5:00 p.m., and a conference doubleheader at Lakeland on
Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Down in Florida, the baseball team finished up with a 2-8 record against a very difficult schedule. The Eagles opposed three different ranked opponents (UW-Stevens Point, Southern Maine, UW-Whitewater), and defeated a Washington and Jefferson team who was ranked just a few weeks ago. In addition, each team BenU opposed on the trip qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament last season.
A familiar foe awaits BenU on Wednesday, as
North Park (8-6) has been a traditional non-conference opponent for BenU over the past few seasons. Last year, the Eagles won a 13-inning thriller against the Vikings in Lisle on a walk-off single from outfielder
John Cervantes. Prior to the extra-inning victory, North Park had defeated BenU six straight times, as the last win for BenU came on March 22, 2007. A CCIW school, North Park has faced three of Benedictine's NACC opponents this season, defeating Aurora and Wisconsin Lutheran while falling to Lakeland.
Wheaton (10-4) is another opponent the Eagles see yearly in non-conference play. The Eagles have success against the Thunder recently, winning the last five games in the matchup, including all three games from last season.
Ty Anderson was the winning pitcher in two of the three games as BenU outscored Wheaton 25-11 in the series.
Sunday's twin bill against
Lakeland (5-6) marks the beginning of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference schedule for the Eagles. BenU will a oppose a Muskies team who played 11 games in Fort Myers, Florida from March 8 through March 15, but has not played a game since. Last season, the Eagles outscored the Muskies 27-2 in a doubleheader behind a 38 hits on the day. Before facing BenU, Lakeland is scheduled to open up NACC play on Saturday at Wisconsin Lutheran.
