Two Conference Games Ahead for Men’s Lacrosse

This week, the Benedictine University men's lacrosse team will take on two Midwest Lacrosse Conference teams. BenU will travel to Carthage for a Wednesday match at 7:00 p.m. and host Hanover on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.

Benedictine (5-2, 1-0) is off to a fast start this season and had a four-game winning streak snapped on Friday at Huntingdon College in Nashville, Tennessee. Over spring break, the team made the trip to Nashville as well as to Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi. Blake Keenan leads BenU in both goals (17) and points (20), while goalkeeper Jeffrey Smitheram is second in the MLC in saves (79) and save percentage (56.4%).

Carthage (7-1, 3-0) will be a tough test for the Eagles on Wednesday. The Red Men finished with just one conference loss in last year's regular season and fell to Aurora in the conference championship game. Off of the impressive season, Carthage was picked to finish in a tie for second in this year's MLC preseason poll. The team's lone loss this season came back on February 7, and Carthage has won six straight since. Last season, the Eagles fell to the Red Men 17-7.

BenU will take on a Hanover (7-2, 3-1) team on Saturday who is also off to a very good start in 2014. The Panthers fell to Concordia-Wisconsin on Saturday, but carried a five-game winning streak heading into the contest. It figures to be a tightly contested contest, as not only do the teams have similar records, but were also picked to finish back-to-back in the MLC's preseason poll (Benedictine sixth, Hanover seventh). Last season, the Eagles defeated Hanover 18-12 on the last day of the season.
