Upon returning from this year's trip to Florida, the Benedictine University softball team was met with many cancellations and postponements to the upcoming schedule. After some re-shuffling, softball now has three doubleheaders scheduled for this week:
Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. on the road against Wheaton and home twin bills against Edgewood on
Saturday at noon and Rockford on
Sunday at noon.
The Eagles went 5-4 in Clermont, Florida, outscoring opponents 44-25 on the trip.
Melissa Guzior's performance (3-1, 0.52 ERA) earned her Northern Athletics Conference pitcher of the week honors for the second straight week, while
Sarah Koch hit .552 (16-for-29) with three doubles and 11 RBI while winning position player of the week honors in the NACC from March 10-16. The 5-4 record was the team's best in Florida since going 7-3 to open the season in Orlando back in 2011.
Wheaton (9-3) could be another test for the Eagles, as were many opponents the team saw in Clermont. The Thunder took the Florida trip a week prior to BenU and finished an impressive 8-2 in the Sunshine State. Upon returning home, Wheaton played a doubleheader against Aurora (who was picked to win NACC in this year's pre-season conference poll) and split. BenU and Wheaton had a doubleheader cancelled last season and split a doubleheader back in 2012.
On Saturday, BenU opens up NACC play with a doubleheader against
Edgewood (8-5). Edgewood has played 13 games thus far, but has not played since March 10. The team went 2-2 at the Superior Dome in Marquette, Michigan on March 1 and 2 before heading down to Fort Myers, Florida for nine games between March 6 and March 10. It will be a tough weekend for Edgewood, as not only does the team face the three-time conference champ in BenU, but also Aurora on Sunday. Benedictine swept Edgewood 6-1, 6-2 last season, and Edgewood's last win in the series came back in 2009.
Conference play continues for BenU on Sunday against the Regents of
Rockford (2-8), who like Edgewood, visited the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area in Florida for a spring break trip from March 9 until March 14. Also like Edgewood, the Regents will take on both Aurora and BenU this weekend, as well as non-conference matchups against Northland and Beloit during the week. Rockford last defeated BenU in a 1-0 game in 2006, and BenU won both games of the series last season.
