After starting off the season with a win, the Benedictine University men's lacrosse team will try to build a winning streak with two games this week. The team will travel to Beloit College for a
5:30 p.m. match on Wednesday, and take on Olivet College at home on
Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
BenU opened the season on Saturday, February 22 with a home win over Calvin College 14-2. In his first game with the Eagles, sophomore transfer
Blake Keenan led the team with four goals, while freshman
Trevor Buman added three. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jeffrey Smitheram stopped 17 shots in net, building off of his solid campaign from a season ago.
The Eagles will take on a
Beloit (2-0) squad on Wednesday night that is off to a fast start this season. Beloit's two wins came against two of BenU's conference foes: an 8-7 win over Elmhurst and a 17-7 win over Fontbonne. Sophomore Jacob Pritscher leads the team with seven goals in the two contests.
Beloit and Benedictine met at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex last season in what turned out to be one of BenU's closest matches of the season. The Eagles were victorious 14-11 behind four goals from Tyer Buschow and two goals each from
Robert Abbott and
Andrew Zmijewski.
On Saturday, the Eagles will welcome
Olivet (0-1) to Lisle for a re-scheduled contest. The Eagles and Comets were scheduled to meet at Olivet in late February, but weather forced the game to be pushed back and moved to Saturday at the home of BenU. Because of that, the Comets have also played just one contest, falling 12-4 against Oberlin back on February 28.
Benedictine and Olivet also met last season in Lisle, with Olivet prevailing 16-12. Despite the loss, Smitheram was strong in goal for the Eagles, stopping 17 shots in just under 40 minutes logged.
