LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team held off a fourth quarter charge from Olivet College to record a 12-10 win on Saturday.
Benedictine did not trail in the contest, scoring the first three goals of the game.
Andrew Zmijewski opened the scoring on a feed from
Trevor Manzke less than five minutes into the game. Back-to-back goals from Olivet at the end of the first and early in the second led to the guests pulling within a goal before Benedictine closed the half with four straight goals to lead 7-2. Two of the goals came from Brandon Berg.
Zmijewski scored twice early in the third to extend the lead to 9-2. Trailing 10-4 at the start of the fourth, Olivet scored three consecutive goals to quickly pull within 10-7.
Blake Keenan and
Kyle Wagner scored to push the lead to 12-7 before a late charge allowed Olivet to scrap within 12-10. The visitors could pull no closer.
Benedictine recorded 40 shots in the contest led by 11 from
Stephen Link and held a 44-42 edge in groundballs. The Eagles won 14-of-24 faceoffs with
Robert Abbott finishing 11-21 in the circle. Zmijewski scored three times in the contest and added a pair of assists. Link, Berg, and Keenan all found the back of the net twice.
Jeffrey Smitheram stopped nine shots in goal.
Benedictine (2-1) is unbeaten at home so far this season and will open conference play on the road next Saturday at Mount St. Joseph.
