Busy Week Ahead for Baseball

The Benedictine University baseball team is scheduled to have a hectic week ahead. As of now, the Eagles are slated to play six games: single games at the University of Chicago on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. and at home against Robert Morris on Thursday at 4:30 p.m., and doubleheaders at home against Concordia-Wisconsin at noon on Saturday and versus MSOE on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

BenU (2-9) may actually welcome the busy week, as the team has played just one contest since returning from Florida on March 22. The team fell 6-5 at North Park last Wednesday despite three hits and two RBI from catcher Justin Kovalsky, who is now hitting a team-high .393. BenU also received 3.1 innings of scoreless relief from Spencer Lehmann and Alex Wolfe in the contest.

The Eagles will face a Chicago (3-9) team on Wednesday that also visited Central Florida for spring break. Chicago made the trip last week to open the season, and after losing the first eight games, won three of the last four to come home on a strong note. The Maroons are slated to take on Hope College at home on Tuesday before facing BenU Wednesday.

Last season, the Eagles used a three-run eighth inning to come back and defeat Chicago at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex on April 3. Spencer Lehmann earned the save after pitching a perfect ninth inning.

Robert Morris (12-9), who also are called the Eagles, is an NAIA school out of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC). The Chicago-based school is already deep into the season, having played 21 games since March 1, including a 3-0 loss against the University of Notre Dame. Robert Morris has won five out of the last six games and has two games scheduled against Purdue University-North Central on Tuesday. The two schools have not met since a 3-1 BenU victory in 2010, and a scheduled meeting between the teams last season was canceled.

NACC play is scheduled to open up for the Eagles on Saturday against Concordia-Wisconsin (5-6, 1-3), who have already played four NACC games. The Falcons split at home against Dominican on Saturday before falling twice at the hands of tenth-ranked Concordia-Chicago on Sunday. Before facing the Eagles on Saturday, CUW is scheduled to face St. Norbert on Wednesday in a mid-week, non-conference game. BenU and CUW met three times last season: twice during the regular season and once during the NACC Tournament. The Eagles won all three games.

MSOE (4-6, 0-0) has also yet to open up conference play this season, and will do so this weekend with doubleheaders at Dominican and Benedictine. The Raiders visited Central Florida for spring break the first week in March, going 4-4 on the trip before falling twice against Capital in Chillicothe, Ohio on March 15. Since MSOE joined the NACC in 2008, the Eagles have won all 14 meetings.
