Softball Looks to Continue Winning Streak

After Monday's doubleheader sweep of Edgewood, the Benedictine University women's softball team now has a five-game winning streak. BenU will look to add to that with six more games between now and Sunday. The team will play a doubleheader against Elmhurst at home at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, then travel to Wisconsin for Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference doubleheaders at Marian on Saturday at noon and at Lakeland on Sunday at noon.

Benedictine (10-5, 4-0) has put up some impressive numbers during the five-game streak. The team has outscored opponents 45-8 while tallying 63 hits over that span, racking up at least 10 hits in each win.

BenU now has players all over the NACC leaderboards. On offense, Sarah Koch is first in RBI (24), second in batting average (.490), and third in stolen bases (nine), while Erin Kotlarz and Kelly Mieszala are amongst the leaders in steals (Kotlarz first with 14, Mieszala fourth with seven). In the circle, Melissa Guzior is tied for second with six wins and second in ERA at 0.62. Also, Holly Haberkorn sits in third in ERA at 0.84.

The Eagles will face a non-conference foe on Wednesday in Elmhurst (8-4) of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Just like the Eagles, the Bluejays visited Clermont, Florida over spring break, which is where all 12 of the team's games were played. Also just like the Eagles, Elmhurst is on a five-game winning streak, having outscored opponents 37-7 in the last five games in the Sunshine State. Last season, Elmhurst took both games of an April doubleheader over BenU, winning 2-1 and 4-3.

Marian (5-13, 2-2) awaits BenU on Saturday in what will be the team's first road NACC doubleheader of the season. The Sabres have already played 18 games this season, having played four games in Marquette, Michigan and 10 games in Tucson, Arizona before opening up NACC play this weekend. Marian played the conference's two River Forest, Illinois schools over the last two days, sweeping Concordia-Chicago on Sunday and dropping both at Dominican on Monday. The Eagles swept Marian 8-0, 7-0 last season.

Lakeland (10-8, 2-2) also opened up NACC play this weekend at the two River Forest schools, splitting with both CUC and Dominican. The Muskies visited Marquette, Michigan and Clermont, Florida for the first portion of the schedule and went 8-6 in 14 games played, including a 10-9 loss to a Wheaton team in Florida that BenU split a doubleheader with last Wednesday. Lakeland and BenU also both took on Lake Forest in Florida, with Lake Forest prevailing against both NACC teams. Benedictine defeated Lakeland 4-3, 11-0 last season, and the Muskies haven't beaten BenU since 2009.
