LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Edgewood to grab a stranglehold on second place in the NACC.

After failing to hold an early 2-0 lead in the opener, Benedictine rallied to win on a walk-off single from Ryan Mullin. Tim Hendricks led off the game with a triple and scored on a single from the next hitter, Justin Kovalsky. Brandon Clark roped a double to extend the lead to 2-0. Edgewood struck for three runs in the third to take the lead. Mullin was able to even the game with an RBI single to score Tim Hendricks in the fifth. The game-winner occured with two outs in the ninth as Mullin plated Nick Severino, who led off the inning with a pinch hit single.

Both hurlers went the distance in the opener. Chris Jordan improved to 3-1 on the season by striking out five in the complete game, allowing three runs on seven hits. Mullin and Tim Hendricks led an 11-hit parade with three each.

Starting pitcher Mike Irgang set the tone in game two, retiring the first six batters of the game. Kyle Bock drew a four pitch walk to open the bottom of the third, stole second, and crossed the plate on a T.J. Floyd double. Floyd scored later in the frame when Tim Hendricks was caught in a run down between first and second.

Irgang retired seven straight following a leadoff single in the third. Benedictine added an insurance marker in the sixth to grab a 3-0 lead when Severino doubled home pinch runner Zach Koziol. Edgewood broke through against Irgang with a run in the seventh before Benedictine broke open the game with four runs in the bottom of the frame. With two outs in the inning, Clark recorded a pinch hit RBI double, bringing home Matthew Higgs. Max Oppenheimer logged a two-run double while Severino picked up an RBI single during the outburst.

Irgang earned his first win of the season by allowing just a single run in eight innings. The junior walked one and struck out three. Oppenheimer collected three hits as Benedictine slashed 12 in the second contest. Mullin and Severino collected two apiece.

Benedictine now owns a two game lead on both Wisconsin Lutheran and Marian in the battle for second. Benedictine swept Wisconsin Lutheran last weekend.
