Baseball Splits at Marian

FOND du LAC, Wis. - The Benedictine University baseball team split the final conference road doubleheader of the season at Marian on Saturday afternoon.

Benedictine overcame early troubles in the opener to rally for a win. Marian scored in each of the first three frames and held a 2-0 edge early. The Eagles took a momentary lead in the top of the third with three runs. Tim Hendricks logged a two-out RBI single to open the scoring. Brandon Clark continued his hot stretch with a two-run single to hand Benedictine the momentary lead. The Eagles went ahead for good in the six with just one hit. The go ahead run scored on an error while the second came across on a Tim Hendricks groundout.

Starter Chris Jordan went the distance, allowing just the three runs, only two of which were earned. Jordan, the 2013 conference pitcher of the year, posted seven strikeouts in the game. Benedictine posted just eight hits in the opener with six coming from the trio of Hendricks, Clark, and Matthew Higgs.

Game two saw Benedictine unable to hold a pair of leads in a 6-4 defeat. The Eagles scored twice in the top of the second to grab a 2-0 edge. Mike Luschen opened the scoring with an RBI bunt single. T.J. Floyd plated the second run with a groundout. Marian took a 3-2 lead with three fourth inning runs. Benedictine responded with two in the seventh to retake the lead. Higgs and Tom Byrne notched RBI singles in the inning. Marian scored three runs in the eighth against the bullpen to pull out the win.

Mike Irgang did not factor in the decision, working six innings and allowing three runs while striking out six. Spencer Lehmann suffered the loss. Luschen finished with three hits as seven different individuals posted a hit in the game.

Benedictine (18-14, 12-4) hosts Rockford in a doubleheader on Sunday. The start time has been moved up to 12:00 p.m. due to forecasted rain.
