Men's Lacrosse Caps Solid Second Season

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team capped off a solid second season with an 18-1 rout of Fontbonne on Saturday afternoon.

Benedictine set the tone very early, winning the opening faceoff and marching down to score quickly. Stephen Link put home a feed from Eric Orndorf just 31 seconds into the contest. Link scored twice in the game. Benedictine held a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and found themselves ahead 8-0 at the half.

The Eagles scored the first 11 goals of the contest and added the final seven after Fontbonne broke up the shutout with 8:37 remaining in the third quarter. Seven different individuals scored in the contest as Benedictine amassed 87 shots along with 64 groundballs. The Eagles also controlled the faceoffs, winning 20-of-23 to go with a perfect 20-for-20 on clear attempts.

Brendon Berg scored five times and added three assists. Blake Keenan, Trevor Manzke, and Ted Jones each scored three times. Rudy Berg scooped 10 groundballs and also won nine faceoffs. Robert Abbott captured 11-of-13 faceoffs. Jeffrey Smitheram faced just four shots in goal, making three saves.

Benedictine closes the regular season with a mark of 10-6 and 6-4 in MLC action. Both win totals are school records. The Eagles improved four wins from the first season and finished just outside the conference tournament picture placing fifth.
