Softball Takes Two in NACC Tourney

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University softball team claimed two wins on the opening day of the NACC Tourney to run a season high win streak to 11 games.

Benedictine rallied in the opener, securing a 9-5 win over sixth-seeded MSOE. The Eagles grabbed an early 3-0 lead with three first inning markers. Kelly Mieszala recorded an RBI double to open the scoring and Sarah Koch followed with a two-run homer. MSOE scored twice in the second and three times in the fourth to open a 5-3 advantage. Benedictine broke open the first game of the day with a six spot in the fifth. Chelsea White led off with a homer to start the frame. Kailee Cable tied the game with a double to score Erin Kotlarz. The go-ahead run crossed on an error. Benedictine scored three times off errors in the opener.

Holly Haberkorn went the distance in the first contest, striking out three in improving to 11-2. White was the lone player to finish with more than one hit, logging two. Benedictine tallied seven as a team.

Game two saw Benedictine race to a 6-0 lead in an 11-1 win over second seeded Wisconsin Lutheran. The Eagles scored four runs in the fourth to pad the edge. Mieszala opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single in the top of the third. Cable homered in the fourth to make it 2-0. White and Mieszala drove home runs in the fourth before the second homer of the day by Koch, a two-run blast. Benedictine scored five times in the seventh to leave no doubt. Koch, Cable, and Shannon Fritsche posted RBIs in the frame and Haberkorn collected a two-run single during the frame.

Melissa Guzior was the beneficiary of the run support. Guzior allowed just a single run while striking out four. The middle of the lineup consisting of Mieszala, Koch, Cable, and Haberkorn combined for nine hits, six runs, and nine RBIs.

Benedictine (30-11) will not play again until 3:00 p.m. on Friday for a place in the NACC Championship.
