Box Score MEQUON, Wis. - The Benedictine University baseball team suffered a 6-3 defeat in the opener of the NACC Tournament on Thursday afternoon.
Benedictine never led in the contest and could not solve the Dominican starter despite rapping 13 hits. The sixth-seeded Stars opened a 3-0 lead with a run in the first and two in the third. Benedictine battled back in the fourth, scoring twice to claw within 3-2.
Ryan Mullin and
Brandon Clark notched consecutive doubles to open the frame. Clark would come around to score on a wild pitch but the Eagles left the bases loaded in the inning.
Using single tallies in the fifth, eighth, and ninth, Dominican opened a 6-2 edge. The first two batters of the ninth inning reached base before Benedictine rolled into a third double play of the game to squash the threat of a big inning. Mullin did record a two-out double to plate
Matthew Higgs, but the Eagles pulled no closer.
Mike Irgang suffered the loss, allowing five runs in eight innings of work. Irgang struck out seven.
Dylan Smith finished out the game with an inning of work. Mullin picked up four hits in the game.
Nick Severino and
Tim Hendricks notched two hits apiece.
Benedictine (22-17) faces Rockford in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. on Friday.
