After a weekend off, the Benedictine University football team will be back in action this coming Saturday. The Eagles will head to Kalamzaoo, Michigan to take on Kalamazoo College for a 12:00 p.m. central time kickoff.
Benedictine is off to a 0-3 start this season despite being outgained by just 112 yards on the season, as a -8 turnover margin is what has hindered the Eagles this season. In the team's last game, a 23-6 loss at home to Adrian College on September 20,
Max Seibert caught eight passes for 79 yards, and
Jarrett Lecas tallied 12 tackles and an interception. Seibert leads the team with 16 catches, while Lecas leads in tackles (36) and has BenU's only two interceptions this season. Lecas is tied for first in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in both categories.
The Eagles will face a Kalamazoo team that hails from the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the same conference from which BenU's last opponent, Adrian, is from. Kalamazoo fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 32-20 in the MIAA/NACC Challenge on September 20, as the Hornets were the only MIAA school to lose on the day.
Like the Eagles, Kalamazoo is 0-3 on the season and will be coming off of a bye week. In addition to the loss to Wisconsin Lutheran, the Hornets lost to Rose-Hulman Institute of Techonology and nationally-ranked Wheaton College at home.
The Eagles are 1-6 all-time against Kalamazoo, with that one victory coming in last season's MIA/NACC Challenge. Last season in Kalamazoo, the Eagles were victorious 28-23, holding off a late comeback. Behind two touchdown passes from
Cyle Schultz to
Blake Anders, the Eagles led 28-10 with just seven minutes remaining. However, Kalamazoo threw a touchdown pass with 3:46 to go, forced a BenU three-and-out, then took a 90-yard run to the end zone to pull within a possession. After failing on a two-point conversion attempt, the Hornets tried an onside kick only to see the Eagles recover and ice the victory.
