BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's soccer team scored their first win of the year by shutting out UW-Platteville on the second day of action at the Illinois Wesleyan 'Clash of the Titans'.
Benedictine defended well throughout the contest, especially early with UW-Platteville generating lots of offense. The Eagles countered, but neither team could score in the first 45.
Nick Kapetanos broke a scoreless tie in the 61st minute, finishing a cross from
Bobby Kostadinov. Kapetanos struck again late to account for the final margin, putting home a shot from
Santiago Beltran and
Ante Markotic.
"This weekend was a very trying test for us," head coach
Rich Nassif said. "Our match intensity, focus, and decision making really progressed this weekend and that showed today as we really dictated the match against a very tough side from UW-Platteville."
UW-Platteville held a 15-11 edge in shots. Kapetanos blasted four for Benedictine with
Anes Kadiric totaling three.
Steve Mack spent the entire game in goal, stopping three shots.
"Our defending came a long way this weekend," Nassif added. "We still have a good amount of corrections but it feels great to get our first victory and a much deserved shutout. The attack really started firing in the second half and some quality combination finished the game off for us."
Benedictine (1-2-1) opens the home schedule against Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.
