MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team saw a six-game win streak come to a close with a 77-60 loss to the four-time defending conference champions, Wisconsin Lutheran, on the road Tuesday night.
Benedictine scored the first seven points of the contest on a pair of baskets from
Nicole Botich and a three from
Meghan Novak. The lead held for more than the first five minutes before Wisconsin Lutheran opened an 11-10 edge with 14:24 remaining in the half.
DeKayla Crayton scored on a layup with 13:07 left to hand Benedictine the lead for the final time at 14-12. The hosts, picked to win the conference in the preseason poll, scored 10 straight points to move ahead by eight points. Wisconsin Lutheran led by 16 at halftime, 45-29, shooting 64.3 percent in the half.
The lead reached 22 points early in the second half. Wisconsin Lutheran led 61-41 with 12:07 to play.
Alanna Ferry hit two free throws to open a string of nine consecutive points for Benedictine. Botich converted on a layup with 8:38 remaining to bring Benedictine within 61-50. Wisconsin Lutheran quickly stretched the lead to 16 and Benedictine did not pull closer than 14 the rest of the contest.
Briana Hamilton paced Benedictine with 13 points, one of three to reach double figures. Botich added 12 and
Vincenza Ranallo 11. The Eagles did hold a 40-30 edge on the glass.
Benedictine (6-6, 6-1) hosts Concordia Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon.
