Volleyball Sweeps at Eagle Classic

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's volleyball team won their first two matches of the annual Eagle Classic, beating Illinois Institute of Technology and Milwaukee School of Engineering in straight sets.

THE DETAILS
• With the score tied at 15 in the first set, an Ashley Karsten solo block sparked a Benedictine run. The Eagles tallied 13 kills in the set en route to a 25-20 win
• Keriann Groen tallied a kill in the second set to take an 8-5 lead. Groen would again find the hard wood to help BenU to a 19-13 lead. IIT would only score one more point in the set
• Caitlyn Martin tallied nine aces in the match, five of them coming in the third set. A Groen block would put the Eagles up 14-6. Illinois Tech would rally to come within two but a Claudia Schmidt and Kara Epping block gave the Eagles a big advantage for the third set win

STAT LEADERS
• Erin Wiegand led the team with 10 kills
• Groen ended the match with six kills and two block assists, one solo block
• Kelcey Adams had 20 assists and seven digs
• Defensively, Kristina Billie led all players with 16 digs and had three aces
• Martin had nine aces

THE DETAILS
• Trailing 11-9 in the first set, Benedictine scored four straight including an ace from Ashley Karsten. MSOE tried to rally back but a Kristina Billie ace secured the 25-3 win
• A back and forth start to the second set saw the match tied at 17. The Eagles went on a 3-0 run on the hand of Kelcey Adams. The Raiders tied it at 23 but committed two hitting errors to fall 25-23
• In the third set, the Eagles led 12-7 but MSOE rallied to take the lead. Keriann Groen and Erin Wiegand found a presence at the net, stopping several MSOE hitting attemps. Tied at 23, Beckie Whitmarsh gave the Eagles set point and they never looked back, winning 25-23
• The match saw 33 ties and 12 lead changes

STAT LEADERS
• Whitmarsh led BenU with 12 kills and Wiegand finished with nine
• Defensively, Billie recorded 23 digs and four aces while Caitlyn Martin had 10 digs
• Kelcey Adams had 35 assists

UP NEXT
The Eagles, now 11-17, continue play in the Eagle Classic on Saturday, taking on North Central at 9:30 am and Millikin at 1:30 pm.
