Women's Hoops Opens NACC Play With Win

LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team scored the first win of the season by besting visiting Alverno College 57-49 in the conference opener for both teams, handing head coach Charlie Averkamp his first career victory.

THE DETAILS
• After falling behind 6-2 less than two minutes into the opening quarter, Benedictine used a 7-0 run to take the lead with Shannon Ryan scoring the final five points of the run with a triple and a layup
• Benedictine held a 12-8 lead after the first and led by eight at 27-19 with just over two minutes remaining in the opening half thanks to an 8-2 run finished on a pair of free throws from Nicole Botich
• Benedictine led 29-25 at halftime
• Ryan connected on a layup with 7:11 to go in the third to hand Benedictine their largest lead at 37-28
• Alverno closed the third quarter with a flurry, finishing on a 5-0 run to pull within 43-41 headed to the fourth
• The visitors took a brief lead at 46-45 with 7:26 to play in the game, but Benedictine responded with an 8-0 run to gain separation and pull away with a Ryan layup making the score 53-46 at the 4:01 mark
• The contest featured one tie and four lead changes

FROM THE COACH
"We received a lot of contributions from many individuals to collect a great team win," head coach Charlie Averkamp said. "All week we discussed how to respond to adversity, and instead of folding when Alverno moved ahead in the fourth, we used a good run to finish to game."

STAT LEADERS
• Hamilton was one of three Benedictine players to reach double digits, scoring a team high 14 points
• Ryan added 12 with four assists while Raven Willis contributed 11
• Nicole Botich finished with eight points and eight rebounds with Alanna Ferry notching seven points and eight assists
• Benedictine limited Alverno to just 29 percent shooting for the game and held a 42-35 advantage on the glass with 15 offensive rebounds
• Benedictine tallied 34 points in the paint

UP NEXT
Benedictine (1-1, 1-0 NACC) leaves for Colorado on Wednesday night and will play two non-conference games this weekend in the Colorado College Tip-Off Tournament beginning Friday night against Howard Payne
