Women's Hoops Opens Trip With Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Benedictine University women's basketball team opened a weekend trip to Colorado with a 63-56 victory over Howard Payne University in the Colorado College Tip-Off Tournament.

THE DETAILS
• Benedictine trailed for much of the opening quarter, falling behind by five points at 8-3 with 7:40 left
• Scoring six consecutive points, capped by a jumper from Briana Hamilton, Benedictine grabbed the lead at 9-8 with 3:45 to play
• Two Nicole Botich free throws in the final minute of the first quarter opened a 12-0 run that enabled Benedictine to lead 22-12 at the 6:17 mark of the second quarter
• Benedictine held a 27-20 edge at the break
• Howard Payne came back to lead late in the third before a layup from Shannon Ryan at the end of the quarter
• The bucket marked the start of a 16-4 run which again enabled Benedictine to lead by double digits at 56-45 and Howard Payne could pull no closer than six the rest of the way
• The game saw two ties and nine lead changes

STAT LEADERS
• Benedictine dominated the glass, holding a 53-31 edge
• Benedictine shot 38.9 percent in the game including 46.2 percent in the second
• Benedictine overcame 24 turnovers and received 22 points from bench players
• Botich finished with 16 points and seven rebounds
• Hamilton notched 13 points and seven boards with Ryan adding 10
• DeKayla Crayton grabbed a game best 14 rebounds
