LISLE, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team capped the home portion of the regular season with an 82-63 win over Dominican, securing a first round home game in the NACC Tournament.
Benedictine did not trail in the contest, shooting 50 percent from the floor in the game. The Eagles scored the first six points of the contest and did not look back.
Tim McGinty scored back-to-back baskets as part of a 7-0 run that put Benedictine ahead 20-7 with 12:57 to play in the first half. A steal and layup from
Michael Blaszczyk put the Eagles ahead 40-18 with 3:27 left in the half. Benedictine held a 44-31 lead at the break after Dominican closed the half with a flurry.
The visitors came out strong to begin the second half, scoring five straight points to pull within 44-36. Dominican pulled within seven points at 61-54 near the halfway point of the second half. Benedictine responded with a 15-0 run to put the game away. McGinty opened the run with a three-point play and finished with a layup to make the score 76-54 with 5:02 remaining.Â
Benedictine won the contest despite making just a pair of three-pointers. McGinty led all scorers with 25 points and nine rebounds, one of four players in double figures. McGinty has scored over 24 points in three straight games.
Adam Reynolds was a force early, scoring 11 in the first half. Reynolds finished with 15 points. Blaszczyk tallied a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Eagles, ranked 17th in the nation in rebounding, held a 50-20 edge on the glass and notched 23 second-chance points.
Tahron Harvey added 13 points off the bench.
Benedictine (15-8, 13-5 NACC) will finish the regular season with two games on the road, returning to the floor on Saturday night at Lakeland.
