The Benedictine University men's volleyball team won their first Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League contest, defeating Loras College in straight sets on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (3-7, 1-3 MCVL) led the first set, going up by as many as seven over Loras (0-8, 0-3 MCVL) and winning 25-21. The second set was not as easy. After being tied at 17, kills from
Eric Tarnow and
John Mathews gave BenU a lead and they never looked back, winning 25-21.
Both team traded points in the third set, but it was the Eagles who tallied 17 kills en route to a 25-23 win.
Mathews led all players with 11 kills while also tallying eight digs.
Sterling Glover had eight kills while
Charles Morrell recorded seven kills.
Markus Riemer had 33 assists and led the team with 10 digs.
As a team, BenU had 44 kills, 43 digs and seven blocks while holding Loras to just 36 kills and 35 digs.
":Loras played well tonight and our guys responded by being focused and tuned in the whole time," said head coach
Dan Buehring. "We had focus at the right times but need to play better and continue to improve and work hard as there is a lot ahead of us that we need to acomplish to remain competitive."
Benedictine men's volleyball is back in action this Friday when they host Mount St. Joseph at 7:30 pm in the Rice Center.
