The Benedictine University men's volleyball team staged a come from behind first set win en route to a sweep of Fontbonne University on Saturday morning in Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League action.
The Eagles (4-8, 2-4 MCVL) were down 4-0 in the first set before slowly adding to the score. Straight kills from
Eric Tarnow and
Zach Loeding tied it at 16. The teams traded points and Fontbonne (3-11, 0-5) took a 23-22 lead on a kill. Two straight FU errors gave BenU the 24-23 lead and
Sterling Glover ended the set with a kill, 25-23.
Fontbonne and Benedictine traded points back and forth to start the second set. The Eagles went up 11-5 on kills from Glover and
Markus Riemer. Fontbonne went on a 7-2 run to take a 13-12 lead before an
Erik Kerber block put the Eagles up 18-16. The Eagles offense went on cruise control, going up 24-17. A
Jake Moran kill secured the 25-17 second set win.
In the third set, Fontbonne tied the game at eight but BenU tallied two straight blocks to take the lead. Ahead 18-12, Glover and Tarnow's offense gave the Eagles game point and Moran ended the match with a kill, 25-17.
Glover led all players with 13 kills while Tarnow had eight kills and six digs.
Ian Thompson led the defense with 16 digs while Loeding had five block assists. Riemer tallied 28 assists and eight digs and
Eric Krasich had two aces.
As a team, BenU tallied 36 kills, 42 digs and nine blocks.
Benedictine men's volleyball is back in action on Friday, February 27 when they host MIT at 2:00 p.m. in the Rice Center.
