The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team will play host for the second time on the young season this Saturday. BenU is set to take on former Midwest Lacrosse Conference foe Carthage College at 11:00 a.m. at the Village of Lisle/Benedictine University Sports Complex.
Last Saturday, Benedictine started off the season strong, defeating Calvin College 20-1 in the season opener in Lisle. BenU opened up a 13-1 halftime lead with eight second quarter goals and never looked back, outshooting Calvin 58-6 in the contest.
Freshman attacker
Corbin Gett earned MLC Offensive Player of the Week honors in his first collegiate game, scoring three times on three shot attempts while dishing out a school record seven assists. Junior midfielder
Eric Orndorf led the team with four goals on the day.
Saturday: vs. Carthage (2-0), 11:00 a.m.
Former members of the MLC, the Red Men of Carthage now compete in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin for men's lacrosse. Traditional CCIW members Carthage, Augustana College, and Elmhurst College all left the MLC this off-season, as the CCIW added men's lacrosse as a sponsored sport. Carthage had been a charter member of the MLC dating back to its inaugural season of 2010, with the Red Men finishing above .500 in conference play each season aside from 2010.
Last season, the Red Men finished 15-6 overall and 8-2 in MLC play, good for third place in the conference. Carthage upset second-seeded Concordia University Wisconsin in the semifinals of the MLC Tournament, winning 10-6 on the road before falling to top-seeded Aurora University in the tournament championship. The team won two matches in Memphis, Tennessee to start off the 2015 season, defeating Southwestern University and host Rhodes College.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools in Lisle, as Benedictine and Carthage met in Kenosha in each of the last two seasons. Last year, the Red Men prevailed 13-3 despite BenU jumping out to a 3-1 first half lead. Carthage outshot the Eagles 55-29 in the contest. Two seasons ago, Carthage won 17-7 despite
Tyler Buschow tallying five goals.
