AURORA, Ill. - The Benedictine University men's basketball team collected an overtime road win over the current leaders of the NACC, Aurora, by a 99-94 count in a wild contest on Wednesday night.
Benedictine forced a turnover with just one second remaining which converted into a layup from
John Dodson to send the game into an extra session even at 85-85. Both teams held eight-point leads in the first half of action.
Michael Blaszczyk drained a three-pointer with 15:57 to go in the first, handing the Eagles a 9-6 lead. The advantage would reach eight points at 16-8 on a three from
Tim McGinty with 14:32 left. Aurora stormed back in the contest, tying the game at 25-25 with 8:45 remaining. The hosts went on to lead 40-32 with just over two minutes to play, but a late surge allowed Aurora to lead just 44-41 at the break.
Aurora opened a 13-point lead five minutes into the second half. Trailing 63-51 with 12:48 left, Benedictine used a 14-0 run to take the lead.
Mack Brown opened the scoring run with a layup.
Tahron Harvey tied the game with a free throw and handed the Eagles a 65-63 lead just past the mid-point of the second. The contest was nip and tuck the rest of regulation, setting up the final moment heroics of Dodson.
Blaszczyk knocked down a triple early in overtime to hand Benedictine the lead at 90-89. Aurora led 93-92, but Benedictine closed the contest on a 7-1 run. Blaszczyk bombed home another three-point with 1:32 remaining to put the Eagles ahead for good.
The contest featured 14 ties and 13 lead changes. Benedictine used just nine players with starters accounting for 80 of the season high 99 points. The Eagles pounded the glass, holding a 47-28 advantage leading to 32 second-chance points. McGinty accounted for a game and season best with 28 points and added nine rebounds. Dodson contributed 21 with five assists. Blaszczyk and
Adam Reynolds picked up 12 points apiece.
Benedictine (13-8, 11-5 NACC) will return to action on Saturday afternoon with a home contest against MSOE.
