The Benedictine University men's volleyball team began Midwest Collegiate Volleyball League action on Saturday afternoon, traveling to #5 Carthage College. The Eagles fell in four sets to the Red Men (21-25, 25-16, 25-18, 25-18).
Benedictine (2-5, 0-1 MCVL) came out on fire in the first set, tallying 16 kills, seven of those from
Eric Tarnow, to take the 25-21 win.
Carthage (3-2, 1-0 MCVL) answered back in the second set, taking a 16-8 lead and tallying nine kills in the 25-16 win. The Eagles offense struggled in the third set, tallying seven kills but had 11 hitting errors. The Red Men took a 17-12 lead and never looked back, winning 25-18.
In the fourth set, CC took an early lead. Benedictine came within one, 14-13, with a block from
Markus Riemer and
Zach Loeding but the Carthage offense was too much to handle as they went on to win 25-18.
As a team, BenU recorded 40 kills while Carthage tallied 54. Both teams had nine service errors but Carthage had 12.5 team blocks while BenU had eight.
Sterling Glover led the Eagles with 14 kills and 11 digs while Tarnow had 12 kills. Defensively, Riemer led BenU with 15 digs and also recording 33 assists.
Ian Thompson and Jame Moran tallied 11 and 10 digs, respectively. Loeding led the team with five block assists and one solo block.
The Eagles continue conference play this Thursday when they host Dominican University at 7:00 p.m. in the Rice Center.
