Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Benedictine University baseball team won and lost games in dramatic fashion in a Saturday doubleheader against Greenville College. BenU fell 3-2 in the first game of the doubleheader on a walk-off hit, but won game two 6-5 on a walk-off of their own.
Â
GAME 1Â
In the first seven-inning affair, the Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 in the top of the third. After a one-out single from
Erik Callaghan, the sophomore advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI double from left fielder
Justin Kovalsky. Kovalsky moved to third on a wild pitch during the next at-bat, which ended in an RBI groundout from
Kyle Bock.
Â
Greenville would not plate runs until getting two to cross in the fifth, hitting a homerun and scoring an unearned run on a single later in the inning. The frame would signal the end of BenU starter
Christopher Jordan for the day, who posted a solid line (4.1 innings, five hits, two runs, one earned, two strikeouts) and earned a no-decision.
Â
After reliever Tim Feeley tossed a scoreless sixth inning, Greenville would strike in the seventh. The Panthers would single three times (twice on bunts) and use and error to propel to a 3-2 victory.
Â
Kovalsky and
Tim Hendricks each tallied two hits for the Eagles in the contest, who totaled eight hits for the game.
Â
GAME 2Â
For the third game in a row, the Eagles built an early cushion. Designated Hitter
Brandon Villanueva drove in Benedictine's first two runs of the contest, doubling Hendricks home in the first and driving in Kovalsky on a third inning fielder's choice to short. Two batters later in the third, first baseman
Quinn Heiner doubled in two runs to build the BenU lead to 4-0. With second baseman
Nick Fillmore up next, the Eagles plated one more on an error.
Â
Starter
Joe Palasiewicz was perfect through three, but hit a wall in the fourth and was lifted for
Dylan Smith after allowing one run. Smith would allow and additional fourth inning run, and Greenville would plate one more in the fifth and two more in the sixth to tie things up at 5.
Â
With the Panthers threatening for further offense in the top of the sixth, relivers
Aidan Berg and
Kamren Ackerman combined to stifle Greenville's chance to take the lead, leaving the bases loaded after a pair of fly outs. Â
Â
After
T.J. Floyd tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the Eagles, Benedictine turned to the bunting game to generate some offense in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder
Justin Montalvo put down a bunt single to start off the inning, and Kovalsky would then sacrifice Montalvo to second. Then,
Kyle Bock doubled to plate Montalvo and give BenU a 6-5 victory.
Â
Benedictine recorded nine hits in the contest, with Kovalsky and Bock tallying multi-hit games at the top of the order. On the mound, Floyd earned the win in his inning of relief, while Palasiewicz allowed just one hit over 3.1 innings.
