The Benedictine University softball team began the 2015 season in Winter Haven, Fla, splitting day one of a doubleheader.
BENEDICTINE VS. TRINITYThe Eagles were first to score against Trinity College in game one.
Chelsea White led off the game with a double to right field, followed by a
Shannon Fritsche sac bunt.
Sarah Koch scored White to take a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Fritsche led off the inning with a triple to center field, scoring on a Koch sac fly to take a 2-0 lead. Trinity cut their deficit in half in the fourth inning, scoring one run on two hits with a BenU error. Trinity took the lead, scoring two runs in the fifth.
The Eagles couldn't tally any hits in the final two innings, falling to Trinity 3-2.
White was 1-3 with a double and run scored while Fritsche was 1-2 with a triple and a stolen base. Koch had two RBI's and
Kelsey Jeffries was 1-2 in the game.
On the mound for BenU was
Melissa Guzior, pitching seven innings, allowing two earned runs, seven hits and had four strikeouts.
BENEDICTINE VS. WESLEYANThe Benedictine bats came alive in the second game, tallying 13 hits as a team and scoring 11 runs against Wesleyan College.
The first two innings saw BenU score three runs including hits from White,
Holly Haberkorn, Koch and the first homerun of the season from
Angie Malsack. The scoring continued in the third with RBI's from
Michelle Reilly and
Katie McKay. In the fourth, Fritsche tallied another triple and was driven in on a double from Koch. A hit from Haberkorn scored two more runs to make it 8-0.
Wesleyan scored two runs in the fifth off of one hit and two BenU errors. After the Eagles tallied one more run in the fifth, Wesleyan responded with a run of their own.
The bottom of the sixth saw the Eagles tally two runs, including an RBI single from
Alex Daviera to win the game, 11-3.
White was 2-3 with an RBI and a double while Koch was 3-4 with three RBI, a double and a triple. Haberkorn was 3-4 with three RBI and also secured the win on the mound for the Eagles, pitching 6.0 innings and allowing five hits, one earned run and tallying six strikeouts.
Benedictine is back in action again Sunday afternoon when they take on University of Wisconsin-River Falls at 12:00 pm (CST) and then face Amherst College at 2:00 pm (CST). Sunday's games are played at the Foundation Academy in Winter Haven, Fla. All games will have live stats that can be found
