BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team did not trail in besting Birmingham Southern College 14-9 to sweep a pair of spring break games.
Jeremy Voyda made a save on the first possession of the contest for Benedictine. The Eagles promptly cleared and
Corbin Gett opened the scoring just over a minute into the game, putting home a feed from
Blake Keenan. With the game tied, Keenan opened a stretch of three consecutive Benedictine goals to put the Eagles in control.
Andrew Zmijewski provided the helper on Keenan's first of the day with 10:54 left in the opening quarter. Birmingham Southern came back to tie the score in the second, but a pair of late goals from Keenan handed Benedictine a 7-5 lead at the break.
Holding onto an 8-7 advantage early in the third, Benedictine ripped off six consecutive goals to put the game away.
Tony DePinto opened the string with an unassisted even strength goal at the 10:01 mark of the third.
Trevor Manzke capped the stretch by scoring on a feed from Gett with 6:50 left in the game, making the score 14-7.
Benedictine scored four times on six man-up opportunities. The Eagles finished with 27 shots and 26 groundballs. Voyda stopped nine shots in net, playing the whole contest. Seven individuals scored in the contest. Keenan led the way with five goals and added an assist. Gett finished with two goals and three assists.
Rich Mix collected five groundballs.
Benedictine (4-2) has won consecutive contests for the first time this season and will return home to open the conference season on Saturday afternoon against Fontbonne at 1:00 p.m.
