Box Score The Benedictine University baseball team opposed the Gators of Allegheny on Thursday in the seventh game of the Florda Spring Break trip. Allegheny defeated BenU 3-2 at Frostproof High School in Frostproof, Florida
The Gators came out of the gate strong against BenU starter
Cody Netzel, scoring two runs in the bottom of the second and one in the bottom of the third off the left-hander. Benedictine would get a run back in the top of the fourth, as catcher
Kyle Bock scored on a sacrifice fly by first baseman
Brandon Clark to make the score 3-1.
Netzel would find a groove over the middle three innings, allowing no hits and just two Allegheny baserunners on walks. In the top of the seventh, Benedictine would strike again, as second baseman
Nick Fillmore delivered a clutch two-out double down the right field line on a 1-2 count. He scored third baseman
T.J. Floyd from second to pull BenU to within one.
Benedictine stuck with Netzel into the seventh inning, as he was lifted with two outs in the frame for
Dylan Smith. Both Netzel and Smith combined to keep the Gators offense at bay in the seventh and eighth to give the Eagles a chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the ninth. However, after designated hitter
Mike Ostrowski led off the inning by reaching on an error, BenU was unable to advance him past first base.
Netzel took the tough loss, pitching 6.2 innings and allowing just three earned runs on four hits, seven walks, and eight strikeouts. Smith was strong in 1.1 innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
At the plate, Benedictine tallied just four hits. Shortstop
Max Oppenheimer was 2-for-4 with a double, while centerfielder
Tim Hendricks and Fillmore recorded the other two hits for the Eagles.
Next up for the Eagles is a 1:00 p.m. Friday doubleheader against St. Norbert College at Chain of Lakes Stadium in Winter Haven, Florida.
