The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team returns home this weekend after a successful trip to Alabama. On Saturday, the Eagles will open up Midwest Lacrosse Conference play with a home match against Fontbonne University at 1:00 p.m.
It was an impressive southern trip for the Eagles, winning matches over Huntingdon College and Birmingham-Southern College. BenU downed Huntingdon 10-8 on Monday, scoring seven straight goals in the second half after trailing 7-3 with 12:16 left to go in the third quarter. On Wednesday, the Eagles won 14-9 at BSC, going on another big second half run (six straight goals) to seal the victory. The Eagles are now 4-2 on the season.
Saturday: vs. Fontbonne (0-6, 0-1), 1:00 p.m.
The Griffins of Fontbonne are off to a slow start 2015, dropping all six matches by an average of 14.8 goals. Last season, the Griffins finished 3-13 overall and 2-8 in MLC play after posting .500 records in both 2011 and 2012. Fontbonne has already begun MLC play this season, falling 13-11 (Fontbonne's closest match of the season) to Milwaukee School on Engineering on March 14.
Benedictine has downed Fontbonne in each of the past two seasons. Last year, the Eagles closed out the 2014 campaign with a decisive 18-1 victory over the Griffins, with
Blake Keenan netting three goals in the contest. In 2012, Benedictine's first-ever MLC victory came in a 14-13 overtime match at Fontbonne on March 23, 2013.
Andrew Zmijewski scored three times in the victory.
