ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Benedictine University men's volleyball team finished a weekend of road conference contests with a highly competitive four-set win over Fontbonne on Saturday, 25-18, 28-26, 23-25, 25-19.
Benedictine did not trail in the opening set.
Eric Tarnow opened a string of six consecutive points to help put the opening set away. Tarnow's kill made the score 15-13. The Eagles trailed for a bulk of the second set before rallying late. Fontbonne held leads of 3-0, 5-1, 8-2, and 10-4 in the second. Benedictine fought off four set points late. Three kills from
Lewis Stein helped put the Eagles in position to rally late.
John Mathews handed Benedictine set point with a kill.
The third was the most competitive set, featuring 17 ties and five lead changes. The largest lead from either side in the set was three points at 14-11 following a kill from Tarnow. Losing early in the fourth, Benedictine was able to take control late and secure the win. Trailing 19-16,
Sterling Glover recorded a kill, the first of nine straight points to secure the win.
Benedictine hit .283 for the match. Mathews led the way with 16 kills. Tarnow added 14 with Glover picking up 10.
Markus Riemer dished out 46 assists.
Zach Loeding picked up four block assists with Mathews adding three.
Ian Thompson led the defense with 16 digs. Mathews and Riemer picked up 14 apiece to notch double-doubles.
Benedictine (7-13, 4-7) continues the road stretch by playing at Dominican on Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m.
