Men’s Lacrosse Set for Cornell, Southwestern

The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team will play two matches this week. BenU travels to Cornell College for a 6:00 p.m. Midwest Lacrosse Conference match on Wednesday before coming home to host Southwestern University on Friday night at 5:00 p.m.

BenU returned home from its Spring Break trip to Alabama with a victory over Fontbonne University on Saturday, downing the Griffins 23-6 to move to 5-2 on the year and 1-0 in MLC play. The Eagles netted at least five goals in each quarter and outscored the Griffins 10-1 in the second half.

Blake Keenan earned MLC Offensive Player of the Week honors, scoring seven times in nine shots. Jeremy Voyda and Jack Collins both saw time in net, making three saves as BenU held Fontbonne to just 15 shot attempts.

Wednesday: at Cornell (1-4, 0-0), 6:00 p.m.

Cornell will play its first conference games as members of the MLC on Wednesday night. A brand new program, the Rams have posted a 1-4 record in year one, winning the season opener against the University of Dubuque 19-3 at home on February 24. The Iowa school had dropped four matches since, all of them coming on the road.

The Rams have struggled offensively since the 19-goal outburst to being the season, netting just seven goals since while allowing 66. With 15 freshman out of 18 rostered players, Cornell relies on youth to contribute heavily both offensively and defensively.

Friday: vs. Southwestern University (4-6), 5:00 p.m.

Hailing from Georgetown, Texas, the Pirates of Southwestern University compete as a Division III Independent. At 4-6 on the season, the Pirates are 1-3 at home, 3-2 on the road, and 0-1 at a neutral site. While the team has been successful away from home, the trip to the Chicagoland area will be the furthest away from home the Texas school will take this season, as Southwestern will also face Elmhurst College on Saturday.

Southwestern is in its sixth season as a varsity program, posting a 30-45 record in the five prior seasons. The team's most successful campaign was last year, as the Pirates went 10-5 and outscored opponents 160-113.
