MT. VERNON, Iowa - The Benedictine University men's lacrosse team improved to 2-0 in the Midwest Lacrosse Conference with a 16-4 road victory at Cornell College on Wednesday night.
Tony DePinto handed Benedictine a 1-0 lead on the first possession of the game. With the contest even at 1-1, the Eagles tallied seven consecutive goals to grab control.
David Blanco opened the run with a goal at the 5:58 marker of the first. Blanco scored again just before the final minute of the opening half, handing Benedictine a lead of 11-2 at the break. The goal was part of a string of eight straight, allowing the Eagles to hold a 16-2 lead.
Benedictine overcame 13 penalties in the contest. The Eagles held a 38-29 advantage in shots and grabbed 42 groundballs. All three goalies played in the contest.
Jeremy Voyda played the entire first half, making eight saves to earn the win. Blanco scored six times and registered 12 shots.
Eric Orndorf tallied three goals.
Rudy Berg won 13 faceoffs and scooped seven groundballs.
Rich Mix added five groundball pickups.
Jamic Adkins anchored the defense, causing four turnovers.
Benedictine (6-2, 2-0) hosts Southwestern on Friday at 5:00 p.m.
