Softball Tallies 26 Runs in Sweep of Rockford

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Offense was on display for the Benedictine University softball team on Tuesday, as the team scored a total of 26 runs in 10 innings at Rockford University. The Eagles swept the doubleheader and extended the winning streak to seven games, defeating the Regents 10-0 in game one and 16-2 in game two.

GAME ONE

The Eagles offense actually started the day off quiet, scoring just once in the game's first four innings and tallying just four hits. BenU scored that run in the top of the second inning, as an error by the Regents allowed Courtney Grasz, who led off the inning with a double, to score from third to take a 1-0 lead.

Holly Haberkorn (win, five innings pitch, three hits, no walks, four strikeouts) continued her recent string of great starts in the circle to protect the Eagles tight lead until the fifth inning, when the Eagles offense exploded for nine runs on seven hits. The Eagles sent 13 hitters to the plate in the inning, scored all nine of the runs with two outs, doubled three times, and tripled once.

At the plate, Shannon Fritsche (2-for-4, double, two RBI), Sarah Koch (2-for-3, RBI), Grasz (2-for-3, two doubles, two RBI), and Melissa Stoch (2-for-2, RBI, sacrafice bunt) all recorded multi-hit games. In addition, Kelsey Jefferies and Chelsea White smacked RBI extra-base hits in the fifth inning (triple for Jefferies, double for White).

GAME TWO

Unlike in game one, the Eagles wasted no time getting some offense going in game two, plating four in the first inning. After White walked and stole second with one out, Koch drove her home on an RBI double. Singles by Kailee Cable and Haberkorn loaded the bases before Grasz delivered with a two-RBI single. A third run would score on an error to give the Eagles an early 4-0 cushion.

After Rockford scored two runs in the first off BenU starter Melissa Guzior, the Eagles scored 12 unanswered runs to close out the game. The Eagles tacked on one in the third courtsey of a Haberkorn sacrafice fly, but the team would explode for another nine-run inning in the fourth. Highlighted by a three-RBI double from Koch and another RBI triple from Jefferies, BenU sent 13 batters to the plate in the inning and tallied 10 hits. The Eagles scored twice more in the fifth on a RBI double from Katie Snyder and an RBI single from Brittany Clark.

In the cirle, Eryn Pondo relieved Guzior and tossed 4.1 scorless innings to earn the win. At the plate, Koch and Grasz each had perfect 3-for-3 days and combined for seven RBI. Haberkorn (two RBI) , Tori Walzak, Snyder, Clark, Alex Daviera, Jefferies, and Emily Chitwood all drive in runs in the game, as BenU tallied 20 total hits.

The Eagles are back in action on Thursday evening, as the team will travel to Chicago Bandits Stadium in Rosemont to oppose the Elmhurst Bluejays in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for game one is set for 3:00 p.m.
